Roughly said, the orchestra is a group of instrumentalists playing a variety of instruments. Here aree some more opinions on what an orchestra is, but in more words:

  • A large group of musicians who play together on various instruments, usually including strings, woodwind, brass and percussion.

  • A performing body of diverse instruments. In the context of Western art music, it refers to the symphony orchestra, an ensemble consisting of a core group of strings of the violin family, to which have been added smaller groups of woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments.

  • An ensemble of players of musical instruments arranged in sections - the strings, the woodwind and brass and the percussion, plus occasionally a harp or a piano.
